Concert was from a two night run - the last of nine total dates on the NorCal tour. Shot on 16mm film with an audio remote truck in the alley. Movie was released in Europe but not in the US. Great band, at one of the best venues in the 'States, the last two nights of the mini-tour they were truly on fire. One venue was so small the band filled the stage and the dance floor. The rare pairing of sly git-tar whizzards Ry Cooder and David Lindley provided the highlights, caustic comic Bob Goldthwait provided the punch lines and red-haired bluesrocker Bonnie Raitt provided the headliner at the benefit concert for the California Environmental Protection Initiative that sold out the Santa Monica Civic on Wednesday.
Raitt (a pretty fair sly guitarist herself) and her band breezed through a solid set of old, new, borrowed and blues tunes and the "Bobcat" spewed a blue brew of today's political and pop-music stew, but it was the near-telepathic, multi-ethnic, musicological, multi-instrumental, ego-free playing of Cooder and Lindley that simply shot out the lights. Cajun, gospel, country, blues, cars, sex, humor, politricks, virtuosity. This one should have been a live album. Source: Los Angeles Times

The story:
The 3rd District Supervisor Election Saga
Bill Wallace won this election! After months of counts, recounts and manual tallies, an Election Contest trial court judge has now ruled that Bill is ahead with a few outstanding votes to be counted which could lead to a tie. In the June primary, sixteen-year incumbent Third District Supervisor Bill Wallace was challenged by one serious candidate - Willy Chamberlain - and two spoiler candidates. A November run-of became necessary. The Wallace campain structured a massive voter-registration drive in Isla Vista and on the UCSB campus and an intensive get-out-the-vote campain that, compared to the primary, more then doubled the voter turn-out in Isla Vista and UCSB to 67 percent. Bill received 77 percent of this IV/UCSB vote, wich comprise an important progressive voting bloc that is a major factor in local environmetal campains. The November election was so close that the results were not certified until December. With only a seven-vote difference between the two cadidates, Bill Wallace asked for a recount and manual tall, wich took place under intense political pressure.
Why Discrepancies In The Voter Count?
On January 5th the Elections Office announced that both candidates picked up dozens of votes during the manual tally - votes that the computers hadn't caught. But more importantly, the Elections Office added 21 new votes that we discovered had been simply misfiled or wrongly cancelled or wrongly purged. Altough the recount left Bill officially 6 votes short of victory, we knew many more voters had been simply misfiled or canceled, and these were almost all "provisional votes" from the Isla Vista area! Many Isla Vista Voters were disenfranchised by either clerical errors at the Election Offices and/or misdirection at the polls. These were the "provisional votes" that occur when people show up at the polls and poll workers cannot find the voters names on the roster. More than one-third of the 974 provisional ballots cast county wide were from Isla Vista and UCSB - an amazing percetage considering that IV/UCSB voters made up only 6 percent of county voters. Over 150 Third Distrct provisional votes were ultimately counted before the court Contest ever began. During the recount and the trial we presented over 100 provisional votes, from people who followed the guidance of elections officials when their names weren't found at the polls. In court we showed how each voter had done everything they reasonable could to vote, yet the court allowed only 21 more provisional votes to be counted. Particularly frustrating are situations where validly registerd voters were assured their provisional votes would count, but their reliance on incorrect information from pollworkers and other officials on election day led to disenfranchisement on their votes. On Thuesday, March 16th, the judge announced that Bill Wallace is leading by two votes; the court also credited the Chamberlin side with showing votes in the original (November) count that ought to be uncounted. Yet the Chamberlain attorneys did not present enough evidence to show how four of these voters voted, and thus they cannot be substracted from either sides tally. This means some formula may be devised to split these ballots; the judge could allow an apportionment formula which, on such a small sampling, could lead to a new costly election. Or the judge could let stand his decision that Bill Wallace had the majority of votes and should be re-seated.

A: "I had everything when we went to record it, but Nick Lowe came up with that riff -- ba dir di dir dit -- which is the icing on the cake. As soon as he started playing that on the bass, Ry started playing it on the guitar, and he was laughing, "Oh, that's great." And that was pretty much the arrangement".

This show was announced about a week and a half after Steve Douglas died in a recording studio with Ry Cooder and other musicians present. It was organized by Joel Selvin (a longtime music writer/reviewer for the SF Chronicle) as a public memorial and family gathering. Douglas' widow said a few nice words.
Ry, Booker T., Hal Blaine and a few other great musicians performed as "house band" and played several songs that really missed the great sax player. (His horn stood at center stage unplayed.) A whole bunch of sax players started and ended the show with the theme from "Peter Gunn" (with Mickey Hart and others on percussion for the finale).
